Founder & Editor

Ben Williams built K12Scan to make school directory data easier for families, journalists, and researchers to explore. He believes education data becomes far more useful when it is organized clearly and paired with editorial content that explains what the numbers actually mean.

Our Mission

K12Scan organizes publicly available K-12 school directory data into a clean, searchable resource for families, educators, journalists, and researchers. We pair structured data with editorial content that adds context and helps users understand what they are looking at.

Every school profile on K12Scan brings together enrollment figures, grade spans, district associations, demographic breakdowns, and location data from official federal sources. Our goal is to save users time and provide a clear, honest picture of the American K-12 landscape without hidden agendas or paid rankings.

What We Do

  • Compile and standardize data from the NCES Common Core of Data (CCD) and the Urban Institute Education Data API
  • Present school profiles with enrollment, demographics, grade spans, and district context in a clean, accessible format
  • Publish editorial guides and articles that help users interpret education data accurately
  • Provide free search and comparison tools for exploring schools by state, district, city, or type

Independence Disclaimer

K12Scan is an independent project and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by any school district, state education agency, or the U.S. Department of Education. All editorial content reflects our own research and opinions.
